What is a walking bus?

A Walking Bus is a safe and fun way to enable groups of children to walk to school together, accompanied by trained adult volunteers.

The aim of the scheme is to help more children walk to school and improve safety by reducing school gate congestion. Since it is powered by good old fashion leg work the walking buses promote healthy life styles as well as awareness of the local neighbourhood, greater independence and provides social opportunities.

Walking bus conductors and drivers The Walking Bus is a scheme encouraging parent volunteers to walk children to school along a set route. The children walk in pairs and everyone wears high visibility clothing. With a driver at the front and a conductor at the back, the children are collected at bus stops at agreed times along the route. The Walking Bus aims to help more children walk to school and to improve safety by reducing school gate congestion.

How does it work?

The bus follows a set route and timetable. The children walk in pairs and everyone wears high visibility clothing. With a driver at the front and a conductor at the back, the children are collected at bus stops at agreed times along the route. Adult volunteers can work a rota sysytem so they do not have to 'walk the bus' every day. All voulnteers are CRB checked and recieve training.
